About me

Hi, I'm Chaporo. I moved to Sapporo from the Tokyo area in the spring of 2023, and on my days off I rent a car near home and drive somewhere new in Hokkaido. I started this blog in Japanese as a record of those trips, and I now write English guides for visitors planning their own.
I have always liked looking at maps, finding places that look interesting and reading about their landscape and nature, so most of my trips are to lakes, capes, mountains and viewpoints. I also love hot springs and saunas, so there is a lot of onsen in these guides.
Because I grew up outside Hokkaido, I try to write what a visitor would want to know: how long the drive really takes, where to park, what it costs, and which stops were worth it and which were not.
How I write these guides
- Every place in these guides is one I have been to myself, and the photos and videos are my own.
- Times and routes are from my own drives. Prices, opening hours and seasons are checked against official sites when I write or update a guide, but they change, so check before you go.
- The English guides are not translations. I look at what English-speaking travelers search for and ask, and write each guide around those questions, using my own notes from the trip.
Where to start
Things to do in Hokkaido is my overview of the whole island, and Day trips from Sapporo covers the places I drive to most. There are 51 English guides so far; you can browse them by area and theme.
