Niseko Day Trip from Sapporo by Car: A Local's Summer Route
Quick answers
- About 2.5 hours from Sapporo on Route 230 over the Nakayama Pass; no expressway needed
- The Niseko Panorama Line climbs through the volcanoes; it is closed in winter (from October 23 in 2026)
- Farm soba with spring water, dairy sweets at Takahashi Dairy Farm, and the steaming Oyunuma pond
- Finish at Makkari Onsen, whose open-air bath faces Mt. Yotei (600 yen)
Niseko is best known for its winter powder, but in summer it is a different place: green slopes, the Niseko Panorama Line climbing through the volcanoes, steaming hot spring ponds, dairy farms, and Mt. Yotei, Hokkaido's "Ezo Fuji", standing over all of it. The drive from Sapporo to Niseko takes about two and a half hours, with no expressway needed. Here is a one-day route all the way around Mt. Yotei, with a farm soba lunch, the Panorama Line and a bath facing the mountain.
Is Niseko worth a day trip from Sapporo in summer?
Yes, if you enjoy driving and mountain scenery. The day is less about one big sight and more about the drive itself: the road over the Nakayama Pass, the straight road that runs toward Mt. Yotei, and the Panorama Line through the Niseko range, with views down over the town. On the way you eat food from the farms at the foot of the mountain and finish in a hot spring. It is a long day, about eleven and a half hours door to door with five to six hours of driving, but the driving is the fun part.

Still deciding where to go? I compare all the day trips I recommend from Sapporo, with drive times and the best season for each, in this guide.

Driving from Sapporo to Niseko
From central Sapporo it is about two and a half hours including breaks, and you do not need the expressway. Take Route 230 south through Makomanai and Jozankei and over the Nakayama Pass, the most scenic way because Mt. Yotei comes into view as you come down. From New Chitose Airport it is also about two and a half hours.
At the top of the pass, Roadside Station Boyo Nakayama looks out to Mt. Yotei in the distance, a good first break.

The Nakayama Pass is a mountain road; in winter it is snowy and can close in bad weather.
A local's one-day route around Niseko and Mt. Yotei
This route sees Mt. Yotei from the east, north, west and south. This is the order I recommend, leaving Sapporo at 8:00. Toilets are at the roadside stations, Fukidashi Park, the restaurants, the farm and the hot springs.
Which day to go: Makkari Onsen is closed on Mondays, Yukichichibu on Tuesdays, and the soba restaurant on Wednesdays and Thursdays (since May 2026, "for the time being"), so Friday to Sunday works best.

Aikawa Viewpoint Parking
Down from the pass, turn right at the Aikawa junction onto Route 276; after about 2 kilometers, a small car park (about nine cars) looks straight down a road that runs toward Mt. Yotei. It is the classic photo of the mountain.

Roadside Station Meisui no Sato Kyogoku and Fukidashi Park
Ten to fifteen minutes north, Kyogoku's Fukidashi Park is where water from Mt. Yotei bubbles out of the ground; it is one of Japan's 100 best waters. The thing to have here is the cold-brew coffee made with the spring water, from the coffee stand in the grounds, which looks out on the mountain.

Lunch at Noka no Sobaya Yoteizan

Ten minutes west, this farm soba restaurant makes its noodles from buckwheat it grows itself and water from the mountain; I had the tofu soba and a bowl of rice with freshly grated wasabi. Behind the restaurant is a pond, and on a still day Mt. Yotei is reflected upside down in it.

It is open from 11:00 to 15:30 from April to November (until 14:30 in winter) and closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. About a kilometer further along the same road, Kitchen Narita serves venison curry and a croquette made from local potatoes.

The Niseko Panorama Line and Goshiki Onsen

From the soba restaurant, about 30 minutes through Kutchan brings you up onto the Niseko Panorama Line, a mountain road that winds through the Niseko range, with the peaks around you and the town far below. It is the highlight of the drive.

Goshiki Onsen sits on the Panorama Line about 750 meters up, between Mt. Niseko-Annupuri and Mt. Iwaonupuri, a base for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Sulfur water runs down the hillside like a stream, and the inn's milky water, which flows straight from the spring without being recirculated, keeps you warm long after your bath. Day bathing is available from 9:00 (10:00 from November) to 20:00, last entry 19:00; check the inn for the current price.

Winter closure: the Panorama Line between Kyowa and the Yuzato gate (18.3 km) is closed every winter; in 2026 it closes from October 23 and reopens in late April.
Oyunuma pond, Niseko Yumoto Onsen

Ten minutes down the road, Oyunuma is a pond where about 1,000 liters of hot spring water a minute well up from the ground, with steam drifting across it and the Niseko peaks behind. The sulfur is strong enough to smell from the car. Its water supplies the baths at Yukichichibu next door, a public day bath (900 yen for adults, closed on Tuesdays).

Takahashi Dairy Farm

About 20 minutes down the Panorama Line, Takahashi Dairy Farm sits on a rise at the foot of the Niseko mountains, with Mt. Yotei across the pasture on one side and the Niseko range on the other. Its Milk Kobo workshop sells sweets and dairy products made with its own milk, and there is a restaurant using the farm's milk and local vegetables. The workshop is open from 9:30 to 18:00 (10:00 to 17:30 in winter), and there are three free car parks for about 230 cars.

Makkari Onsen

Twenty to thirty minutes around the south side of the mountain, Makkari Onsen has an open-air rock bath that faces Mt. Yotei head-on, close enough to see the trees on its slopes. The water is clear and silky and the outdoor bath is not too hot, so you can stay in and look for a long time, and there is a sauna with a properly cold plunge. It costs 600 yen, is open from 10:00 (11:00 from October to March) to 21:00, and is closed on Mondays; it is also closed for maintenance from November 2 to December 21, 2026.

Niseko in winter by car
From November to April the roads around Mt. Yotei are snowy, the Panorama Line is closed, and the Nakayama Pass can close in storms. Stick to the main roads and allow extra time. My guide to driving in Hokkaido has more on renting a car and winter roads.
