Kitchen Narita (手作りキッチン なり田) is a restaurant with about 30 seats on the edge of Kutchan, at the foot of Mt. Yotei, cooking with local ingredients: Ezo deer, Hokkaido beef and Danshaku, a local potato variety, kept through the winter so they turn sweeter. From the window seats you look straight at Mt. Yotei.

Venison curry and potato croquette

The venison curry and potato croquette set at Kitchen Narita, with salad and yogurt

I had the croquette and venison curry set (1,000 yen when I went): wild Ezo deer stewed with spices and fruit into a spicy curry, with a homemade croquette of sweet winter-stored potatoes. The venison has no gamey taste at all and is juicy; you could easily mistake it for beef. The croquette is crisp outside and fluffy inside, and the set even came with a salad, yogurt and zucchini pickles.
