Quick answers

  • An open-air rock bath that faces Mt. Yotei head-on

Makkari Onsen, in the village of Makkari at the foot of Mt. Yotei, is a source-flowing hot spring with an open-air rock bath that faces the mountain head-on, close enough to see the trees on its slopes and the gullies cut by old eruptions. It costs only 600 yen. Note: it is closed for maintenance from November 2 to December 21, 2026.

The view from the bath

The water is clear but silky, and the outdoor bath is a little cool, so you can stay in and look at the mountain for a long time. There is a sauna for five or six people and a properly cold plunge, and you cool off outside with Mt. Yotei right in front of you.

Cottages, restaurant and tofu

In the grounds there is Restaurant Maccarina and the Makkari Tofu Kobo, both using mineral-rich water from Mt. Yotei, and cottages where you can stay with a view of the mountain. From the cottages, Mt. Niseko-Annupuri is in view as well.
