Hotel Shikanoyu Day Bath in Jozankei: Sauna, Cold Plunges and Where to Park

Hotel Shikanoyu Day Bath in Jozankei: Sauna, Cold Plunges and Where to Park

Quick answers

  • The Shika no Mushi sauna (2022): a Finnish sauna with natural-water auto-löyly
  • Two cold plunges fed by mountain stream water: 14–16°C and 7–9°C
  • An outdoor bath beside the Toyohira River, lit up at night
  • Day visitors park at the second car park, about 450 m from the entrance

Hotel Shikanoyu is a long-established inn in Jozankei, named for the wild deer said to have healed their wounds in its spring. Day visitors are welcome.

The sauna

The highlight is Shika no Mushi, a sauna opened in December 2022: a Finnish sauna with auto-löyly using natural water, smelling of cypress inside. The cold plunges run with stream water from the source of the Toyohira River, one at 14–16°C and a "numbing" one at 7–9°C. Afterwards there are three lounge chairs each indoors and by the outdoor bath, plus six ordinary chairs indoors. Sauna mats and a shower by the sauna are provided.

The hot spring

The water is Jozankei's own, a sodium chloride spring that keeps you warm after the bath; it is clear and gentle on the skin. Indoors there is a hot bath (40–43°C) and a lukewarm one (36–39°C), and going back and forth between them feels great. The outdoor bath sits beside the Toyohira River, and at night it is lit up, with steam drifting over the water.

After the bath

Upstairs, the Shika no SALON lounge serves an Oropo (Oronamin C and Pocari Sweat, the classic Japanese after-sauna drink) with the Oropo plan.

Where to park

The hotel's car parks are split: the one in front of the entrance is for overnight guests. Day visitors use the free second car park, which is large but about 450 m from the entrance.
