Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten is an inn in Jozankei, one of the three great hot spring towns of Hokkaido, that also takes day bathers. It is part of Yamanokaze Machi, a small area of inns, a bakery, a cake shop and a set-meal restaurant. Inside it feels like a stylish cafe, with a coworking-style space by the lobby and a drink counter at the back where you can have a drink.

The inn

The drink counter at the back pours Hokkaido sake, and the bottles line the wall.

The sauna and the baths

The best part is the hot spring and the sauna. The water is clear and smooth, and there is an outdoor bath. The sauna, called "Atsu-atsu Atsukan", is set to about 80°C, not very hot, until the auto-löyly every 15 minutes: suddenly you are wrapped in steam and the sweat pours out. The cold plunge is properly cold, and afterwards you cool off outside among the trees; in winter, cooling off indoors is better, and the bath hall is well ventilated and cool enough for it. The smell of cypress and quiet music make it a relaxing sauna.

Perhaps because it is tucked away, it was not crowded even at weekends when I went; the afternoon, before most overnight guests arrive, seems quiet. Many Jozankei baths are busy at weekends, so this is a good one to know.
