Cafe de La Paix: Raclette in a Forest Cabin in Biei
Quick answers
- A cabin cafe hidden in the woods of Biei
- Raclette: cheese melted on a grill and poured over sausages, vegetables, potatoes and bread
- 10:00–18:00; closed on Thursdays (open on holidays) and in winter
- Parking for about 5 cars
Cafe de La Paix is a hideaway cafe in the woods of Biei. There is curry and cake on the menu, but the one to have is the raclette.
Raclette

The cheese melts in pans under the grill, and on top you cook sausages, bacon, mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, potatoes and bread, then pour the cheese over them. The sausages are especially good, juicy and mild, so they go perfectly with the cheese.
Finding it

The cafe is down a path through the trees, under a wooden sign. It sits halfway between the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls area and the Panorama Road around Shikisai no Oka, so it works well as a lunch stop between the two: one area in the morning, the other in the afternoon. On a summer weekend, phone ahead if you are coming at lunchtime.
