The Jet Coaster Road in Kamifurano: Where to Enter for the Best View

The Jet Coaster Road in Kamifurano: Where to Enter for the Best View

Quick answers

  • A dead-straight road that rises and falls over the hills like a roller coaster
  • Enter from the north (Biei) end: turn right off Route 237 about 1 km past Kanno Farm
  • No car park: stop only where you will not block traffic
  • About 40 minutes from Asahikawa, 2.5 hours from Sapporo

The Jet Coaster Road is a long, straight road in Kamifurano that dips and climbs over the hills like a roller coaster, with farmland and the rolling hills of Furano all around. It is one of the Eight Views of Kamifurano and a favorite photo spot; when I went, there were several people taking pictures. The trick is to come in from the north end, and the turn-off is easy to miss.

What is the Jet Coaster Road like?

The straight Jet Coaster Road dropping away between tall trees toward the hills

The road runs dead straight for about 2.5 kilometers, rising and falling over the hills, so from the top of each rise you look down a long series of dips. The farmland and hills around it are the patchwork fields Furano is known for.

Where to enter for the best view

The roller-coaster view is from the north, the Biei end. Driving south on Route 237, pass Kanno Farm; about 1 kilometer later the road curves downhill, and partway down the curve you turn right, across the oncoming lane, at the sign for Nishi 11-sen (西11線).

There is no car park. Do not stop on the road or on a crest: it is a working farm road, and cars come over the rises quickly.

How to get to the Jet Coaster Road

From Asahikawa: about 40 minutes. Take Route 237 toward Biei and Furano, carry on through Biei, pass Kanno Farm, and about 1 kilometer later turn right at the sign for Nishi 11-sen.

From Sapporo: about two and a half hours. Take the Do-o Expressway toward Asahikawa, exit at Asahikawa-takasu IC, drive to Biei and follow Route 237 south as above.

Senbo Pass, another of the Eight Views of Kamifurano, looks across the hills of Biei to Mt. Biei-Fuji, Mt. Biei and Mt. Tokachi, and Shinei no Oka has a 360-degree view of the mountains and hills.
