Shikisai no Oka, in Biei, is a huge hillside farm planted in stripes of flowers, with the mountains of the Daisetsuzan and Tokachi ranges behind. From spring to autumn, lavender, sunflowers, cosmos and many other flowers bloom one after another across the slopes, like a rainbow carpet. Admission is free except from July to September, when it is 800 yen for adults.

What is Shikisai no Oka like?

Striped flower beds with a heart pattern on the hillside at Shikisai no Oka, with mountains behind

The name means "hill of the four seasons' colors". The flowers are planted in long bands across the rolling hills, so from the top you look down on stripes of red, yellow, purple and white running toward the mountains. Different flowers bloom as the season goes on, so the colors change from spring to autumn; in summer the lavender turns whole slopes purple.

It is not only the flowers. From the hill you can see the peaks of the Daisetsuzan range and the Tokachi range, and the patchwork of fields that Biei is known for.

Carts and the alpaca farm

The hill is big, and you can ride around it instead of walking: carts that you drive yourself run along a road between the flower beds, at 2,200 yen per cart. There is also an alpaca farm where you can feed the alpacas, which makes it popular with families.

How to get to Shikisai no Oka by car

From Sapporo: two and a half to three hours. Head to Iwamizawa or Mikasa on Route 12 or the Do-o Expressway, then cross the mountains to Furano on Route 452. The pass is a mountain road, so drive carefully. From Furano, head north through Kamifurano; the easiest way is to set your car navigation to the phone number, 0166-95-2758.

From Asahikawa: about 40 minutes south on Route 237, through the center of Biei.

Near Shikisai no Oka

The Jet Coaster Road, a straight road that rises and falls like a roller coaster through the fields, is a few minutes away, so see the two together. Shinei no Oka, a hilltop park with a 360-degree view of the mountains and the hills of Biei, is close too, and for lunch, Cafe de la Paix in the forest serves raclette.

In summer, Route 237 through the middle of the valley gets very congested. My Biei and Furano guide has a loop that keeps to the quieter roads, with Shikisai no Oka outside the midday peak.
